Kim Kardashian Endorsements under Fire
Sources say that the powerful and all-mighty Federal Trade Commission are adamant about cleaning up social media ads that are deemed to sneaky and misleading. In a news release on Wednesday, the FTC said they are actively sending out notices to prominent Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook users, reminding them to “clearly and conspicuously disclose their relationships to brands.”
The agency also warned that common disclosure tactics—such as including the hashtag #sp or putting a “sponsored” label near the bottom of a post—are not sufficient.
“[M]any consumers will not understand a disclosure like “#sp,” “Thanks [Brand],” or “#partner” in an Instagram post to mean that the post is sponsored,” said the agency, adding influencers should mention a sponsorship deal near the top of a post.
Officials with the Federal Trade Comm
ission would not say which celebrities got those notices, but we all can safely guess that Kim Kardashian got a notice. Kim along with the rest of the Kardashian crew regularly endorses things on Instagram and Twitter. The FTC is already dealing with a 2015 complaint dealing with Kim K. endorsing a morning sickness pill.
Kim Continues to “light up” her social media accounts with ad posts but now, she is including the word “ad “with a hashtag.
Last year, the FTC went to blows with Warner Brothers and the very popular YouTuber PewDiePie. Will this be a permanent change when it comes to celebrity endorsements on social media? Or is this just another News Story?!?
